special guest/PATRICK McDONALD talks about his 5th outfit: #5 in five acts

What items did you use to compose this particular outfit? The Fez I am wearing is from my travels to Istanbul, one of my favorite cities.  I found the Fez, red silk scarf and jewels from the Grand Bazaar. My caftan was custom made for me, by my friend Javier, he works with Koos Vanden Aker and he used to work for one of my dearest friends Fabrice, who’s no longer with us but he is always in my heart. The needlepoint slippers are by Stubbs and Wooten.

How did you arrive at the decision to compose such an outfit?
I was feeling exotic and I like how a caftan just flows and drapes over the body, it feels very natural.

Did you compose this outfit spontaneously or was it planned ahead of time?
It was very easy to put this outfit together—effortless.

In a scale of 10, how pleased are you with this composition/outfit?
I feel like I am over the Turkish moon with this caftan. I can wear it to summer soirees on Fire Island or to friends terraces and backyards in the city. I would even wear it to Central Park!

What roles does color, fit and material play in this particular outfit?
Loose and flowing is important while wearing a caftan. Lots of color is a must with this ensemble.

How soon would you repeat/wear this same outfit again?
I would wear this everyday at the beach, it would be my signature.

Personally, I believe in sartorial therapy—in the sense that there is a spiritual, an emotional, intellectual or a psychological aspect to what/how we dress. What is your personal experience in relation to this outfit?
This look evokes mystery to me. It makes me feel glamorous like a peacock or bird of paradise.
