PICTURE: #13 IN SIXTEEN ACTS
SPECIAL GUEST INTERVIEW:
TZIPORAH SALAMON TALKS ABOUT HER 13th OUTFIT
What items did you use to compose this particular outfit?
Silk opera cape from Bombay India, circa l870’s
Kashmir style silk embroidery bought at a show in NY Vintage Missoni scarf
Cashmere knickers I had made
Vintage embroidered silk men’s cap
Tadjik paisley silver earrings with coral and turquoise bought from Singkiang
How did you arrive at the decision to compose such an outfit?
I fell in love with the cape upon first seeing it. I had never seen such beautiful handiwork.
Did you compose this outfit spontaneously or was it planned ahead of time?
The outfit took years to compose. First, I had the knickers made using the same aubergine color of the cape. Then I found the hat, which worked perfectly, with the paisley embroidery. The scarf took sometime as there were many colors that it had to pick up. I was overjoyed when I found the earrings because they were the same paisley motif of the cape. They finished off the outfit beautifully.
On a scale of 10, how pleased are you with this composition/outfit?
I love this outfit. I would give it a 10.
What roles do color, the fit, and integrity of fabric play in this particular outfit?
Color is key—the aubergine and blue and hint of red being picked up in the cape, scarf, cap and earrings. And the paisley motif repeated throughout – in the cape, cap and earrings.
How soon would you repeat/wear this same outfit again?
I will wear this outfit in the fall when the weather turns cool when I want to feel artfully decked out.
There is perhaps a spiritual, emotional, intellectual or psychological aspect to the what/how we dress. What is your personal experience in relation to this outfit?
The cape – which is really a mantle – fits so snug and so well and is so exquisitely made that I feel very regal in it. The superior embroidery and the richness and complexity of the paisley connect me to the past and I am instantly transported to a time and place of long ago.
